Folk-punk band Levellers announce a “grass roots” tour in November 2010 taking in 18 towns and cities around the UK. After enjoying some sweaty club shows in Europe in 2009 the band have decided to book a tour playing gigs not on their usual UK touring circuit. The band will be playing in some of the towns and cities they played at when they were first starting out and others that they have never played before!
Fiddle player Jon Sevink had this to say “We really enjoyed playing some smaller venues in Europe last year and thought that it would be fun do something different in our own country - a return to our roots”. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its original release in 1990, the Levellers debut album, “A Weapon Called The Word” is being re-issued on the band’s own label On The Fiddle recordings in October 2010. The album has been digitally re-mastered and includes four previously un-released tracks from a BBC Radio 1 session and tour DVD, shot on a handy cam by the touring crew that dates from 1991. The BBC tracks are from a Mark Goodier session and the DVD catalogues the heady days of the Levellers meteoric rise.
As a way of documenting the tour and highlighting the release of “A Weapon Called The Word” the Levellers are making a groundbreaking blogumentary. The band have enlisted the help of film-maker and ex-Chumbawamba vocalist Dunstan Bruce. Dunstan’s company, Dandy Films, is based at the Levellers Metway Studios and he has made documentary called “Clowns” that was broadcast by BBC TV and more recently he has documented Sham 69’s first visit to China.
The blogumentary will comprise of candid footage of the band on tour in the provinces of the UK, interviews with local pressure groups, fans, grass roots activists, local characters and location pieces. The aim of the blogumentary is to show life on the road for a touring band and to give a mouthpiece to anyone who has something to say in the towns that the band visit. Several new video clips will be uploaded each day to www.aweaponcalledtheword.com throughout the tour.

On August 7th, The Levellers play a charity concert for the Love Hope Strength Foundation at Rhuddlan Castle, North Wales. The concert is preceded by a climb to the summit of Snowdon, led by The Alarm’s lead singer, Mike Peters and singer songwriter, Nick Harper. On Saturday August 7th 2010, Mike Peters, the internationally acclaimed singer of Wales' most legendary rock and roll band The Alarm will once again host 'Snowdon Rocks' (supported by Barclays) for an incredible fourth year running and as well as the now traditional daytime musical journey to the summit of Mt. Snowdon, Snowdon Rocks 2010 is expanding it's format to include Rhuddlan Castle Rocks, a first ever (post-climb) acoustic concert at historic Rhuddlan Castle with a very special headline performance by UK folk-rock outfit The Levellers plus additional musical appearances from acclaimed LHS Supporting singer songwriter Nick Harper and Mike Peters himself.
In addition Love Hope Strength Foundation will also be hosting ground breaking Bone Marrow Donor Drives (in conjunction with Anthony Nolan Trust). LHSF CO-Founder Mike Peters says, "We will be asking eligible and able bodied members of our community to come forward and put themselves on the Bone Marrow Donor list. Being a bone marrow donor in 2010 is a simple, painless and effective way of being a life saver. Together (with the Anthony Nolan Trust), we are hoping to break down the myths surrounding Bone Marrow Donation and show people that the new way to join the register and become a Bone Marrow Donor is as simple as performing a Saliva DNA Sample test (by spittting into a bottle). If you are fortunate enough to become a lifesaving match then, via a painless blood transfer process, you could be the one to save a life."

Snowdon Rocks is the cornerstone event of the Love Hope Strength Foundation UK chapter, and as an individual event has so far raised well over £120,0000 which was been shared between The North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (funding helped build the Eira Suite antibody unit), The Alaw Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd (which used it's funding to buy two Stem Cell Harvest Machines worth over £90,000) and other donations which have been shared amongst cancer care centres throughout North Wales.
All proceeds from 'Snowdon Rocks IV', 'Rhuddlan Castle Rocks' and 'Rhondda Rocks II', will go directly to support Cancer Care in Wales, the national health service organisation which diagnosed and successfully treated Mike Peters (a two times cancer survivor) for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) in 2005/06 and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (1995). Mike Peters is still undergoing long term maintenance treatment at the Alaw Unit, Ysybyty Gwynedd with a view to finding a cure under the watchful eye of Dr. David Edwards who has been Mike's haemotologist throughout both of his cancer battles. Love Hope Strength Foundation recently secured the purchase of two Stem Cell transfer machines (worth over £90,000) which will be housed in the Alaw Unit. Dr. Edwards says “The current machines are approaching 10 years old & coming to the end of their functioning lives. The new machines are state-of-the-art and reflect all the technological advances made in that time. They will take us through the next decade and enable the service to be expanded across the whole of North Wales. Their faster processing-time means that we should get better yields more quickly and spare patients having to spend so long attached to the machine. They represent a major step forward in developing the service and we are delighted that “Love Hope Strength” have made this possible.”
Love Hope Strength Foundation UK has this year attracted the support of Barclays Bank who are getting behind both events by offering financial support and encouraging staff and customers from within the banking community to get involved and climb a mountain in support of the cancer care initiatives that are being proffered by Love Hope Strength Foundation. Also throughout 2010, Mike Peters and members of the LHS UK / US team have been lobbying in Parliament (with the help of local MP's Chris Ruane (Denbighshire) and Mark Tami (Deeside) to bring the UK into line with other international countries such as Canada and Germany who have progressive policies with regard to Bone Marrow Donors. Mike Peters, Chris Ruane MP, Mark Tami MP and LHSF have been attempting to raise the age of UK Bone Marrow Donors from 45 to 49 to help those in need to find their lifesaving match. As a result of this endeavour, a major review of the UK's policy is currently being conducted by Health Minister Gillian Merron with results due to be published in the spring.

The festival, which is now in its eighth year, takes place in Devon from Friday 20th to Sunday 22 August. As well as live music across five stages the festival has a huge children’s area in the centre of the festival, walkabout theatre, amazing site art, comedy, food & craft stalls, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen, a village shop and pub-price bars run by Otter Brewery.
